The best IPTV players for Mac in 2026
By the Supernova developer · · 4 min read
Watching IPTV on a Mac is a bit different from the other Apple devices. Many “Mac” IPTV players on the App Store are in fact iPad apps that run on Apple silicon Macs. They work, but they were designed for a touch screen, not for a window, a trackpad and a keyboard. Only a few players are real Mac apps.
And as on every device: these apps are players only. None of them provides channels, movies or a subscription. You bring your own M3U playlist or Xtream account, from a source you are authorised to use.
Native Mac app or iPad app?
On the Mac App Store, look at the line under the app name or in the compatibility section:
- A native Mac app is built for macOS: resizable windows, the menu bar, keyboard and trackpad navigation, and it can run on Intel Macs if the developer supports them.
- “Designed for iPad” means the iPad app runs as is on an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later). Controls are sized for fingers, windows don’t always resize well, and it won’t install on an Intel Mac.
Neither is wrong, but if you watch a lot on your Mac, a native app is more comfortable.
Supernova (our app)
Supernova is a native Mac app, and the same purchase also covers iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
- Mac: a real macOS app, designed for a window, the trackpad and the keyboard. Requires macOS 26 or later.
- Sources: M3U playlists (by URL) and Xtream accounts.
- Free: unlimited playback of live TV, movies, series and replay, one account or playlist, and iCloud sync of profiles, favourites and progress. Start an episode on your Mac, finish it on the Apple TV.
- Premium: $1.99 per month with a one-week free trial, $17.99 per year, or $29.99 per year for Family (up to 6 members). It adds more accounts and playlists, offline downloads, Chromecast and actor filmographies, plus multiview and Picture in Picture on the devices that support them.
- Playback: Apple’s player and VLC, so MKV, TS and other formats play, with automatic fallback to VLC if a stream fails.
- Strengths: movie and series pages with posters, plots, cast and seasons from TMDB, even for M3U playlists; a TV guide and replay when your source provides them; profiles for the whole family; six languages.
- Good to know: macOS 26 is required, and the app is young, with few ratings so far.
- Best for: people who want a real Mac app that stays in sync with their iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

The other native Mac app in this list, with a strong focus on formats and protocols.

- Strengths: a wide range of network protocols and stream formats (HTTP, RTSP, RTMP, UDP, HLS, MPEG-DASH and more).

NowSeen (iPad app on Apple silicon)
A 2026 newcomer mixing IPTV and media servers.
- Sources: M3U, Xtream, Plex, Jellyfin and Emby.
- Strengths: programme guide with reminders, catch-up, profiles with PIN, iCloud sync, Trakt or Simkl.
- Price: live TV is free; Premium is $1.99 per month, $17.99 per year or $44.99 lifetime.
UHF (iPad app on Apple silicon)
Generous free version and media server support.
- Sources: M3U8, Xtream, Plex, Jellyfin and Emby.
- Strengths: TV guide, catch-up, downloads and search for free; recordings with the UHF Server companion app.
- Price: free; optional PRO plan at $1.99 per month, $17.99 per year or $49.99 lifetime, which adds multi-device sync.
VLC (free, general-purpose)
VLC isn’t an IPTV app, but the free, open-source media player can open an M3U playlist on a Mac. It plays almost any format, but there is no Xtream login, no TV guide grid, no posters and no sync. It’s a good tool to test whether a stream works, less so to watch every day.

FAQ
Can I watch IPTV on an Intel Mac?
Only with a native Mac app that still supports Intel: “Designed for iPad” apps need an Apple silicon Mac. Check the compatibility section of the App Store page; Supernova and Perfect IPTV Player also require macOS 26.
Do these apps include channels?
No. They play the M3U playlist or Xtream account you already have, from a source you are authorised to use.
Can I start watching on my Mac and finish on the TV?
Yes, if the app syncs watch progress between devices. Supernova does it for free through iCloud, on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. For the TV side, see our step-by-step guide for Apple TV and our comparison of Apple TV players.
